Through the widest and deepest offering in cargo handling and shipyards, we deliver excellent technology in a fair way to improve the safety, sustainability, and productivity of your operation. We bring our global knowledge to bear on your local needs, to maximize the efficiency of your operation with the lowest possible life-time cost of ownership.
Intermodal terminals are inland terminals that are trans-shipment hubs for inland container traffic. As such they are generally located at “nodes” of geographical connection between roads, railways and rivers. Therefore, containers need to be handled between road trucks, rail wagons and sometimes river barges. We offer a variety of equipment for intermodal handling, extending from reach stackers to manual RMG cranes to RMG cranes with automation. Our offering extends to warehousing and logistics, with electrical overhead cranes and software that controls warehouse processes. No company offers more for intermodal than Konecranes.
Reach stackers are a special kind of heavy-duty lift truck that can pick containers up from the ground and transport them to a stacking area. They are general-purpose container handling machines, serving the quayside, road trucks and rail wagons as needed.
RMG cranes run on rails in the container yard, or on rails inland, in intermodal yards. Like RTGs they provide high container stacking density fast travel along the rails. They can be operated manually or as part of an automated system. Learn more…
Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) are driverless, automated, low-slung machines that are specialized for horizontal transport between the quayside and container yard. AGVs are part of an automated system which includes software and control components.
For a solution geared to your intermodal terminal please contact our experts.
At the quayside of your container terminal you have a choice of two crane concepts. They are designed for different quayside handling roles.
STS cranes are made for high-performance container handling at the quayside in medium-sized and large container terminals. They are specialized cranes, designed to load and unload container ships at the highest possible speed for fast ship turn-around times.
Mobile harbor cranes are made for material handling of maximum flexibility in multi-purpose terminals dealing with containers, bulk materials, general cargo and/or project cargo. As their name says, they are mobile – moving around the terminal on rubber tires or rails.

“Horizontal transport” is container handling equipment that moves containers between the quayside and the container yard. We offer different types of equipment to do this job.
Reach stackers are a special kind of heavy-duty lift truck that can pick containers up from the ground and transport them to a stacking area. They are general-purpose container handling machines, serving the quayside, road trucks and rail wagons as needed.
Sprinter carriers are straddle carriers designed for fast horizontal transport. They are shorter than conventional straddle carriers, stacking containers two-high. They are fast “sprinting” machines that can serve road trucks and rail wagons as well.
Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) are driverless, automated, low-slung machines that are specialized for horizontal transport between the quayside and container yard. AGVs are part of an automated system which includes software and control components.

A container yard is the area in which containers are stacked for storage in container terminals. This area takes up most of the terminal area. Terminals vary and so will the container yard. We offer various types of container handling equipment for the container yard.

Straddle carriers are a specialized type of container handling machine that offers excellent container move flexibility across a container terminal. The straddle can do all the needed container moves, pick-up, transport, and stacking containers 1-over-3 high.
Like the name says, RTG cranes move on rubber tires. They are specialized container handling machines for the container yard, where they move up and down the stacks, picking and placing as needed. They can stack containers up to 1-over-7 high, and 8 lanes wide depending on the yard configuration. They can be operated manually or as part of an automated system.
RMG cranes run on rails in the container yard, or on rails inland, in intermodal yards. Like RTGs they provide high container stacking density fast travel along the rails. They can be operated manually or as part of an automated system.
