This is already the fifth repeat order for Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes (RTG) from both Georgia Ports Authority in Savannah and South Carolina State Ports Authority in Charleston, USA. This time the orders consist of six plus four optional RTG's to Charleston and five RTG's to Savannah. The total order value (excl. options) is around EUR 15 million. The cranes are to be shipped at the end of this year.
Konecranes VLC has previously delivered its first new generation RTG's, four units, to Georgia Ports Authority, Savannah in 1995. Six additional units were delivered in 1998, 1999 and 2000. Since 1998 15 similar RTG's have also been delivered to the Carolina State Ports Authority in Charleston. After delivery of these cranes there will be totally 36 Konecranes new generation RTG's in operation in Charleston and in Savannah.
The manufacturing of the new RTG's will again take place in Finland and Europe and the cranes will be delivered in big sections to Savannah and Charleston for site erection.
The lifting capacity of these 16 wheel RTG's is 50 tons to Charleston and 40 tons to Savannah. Lifting height is 15 meters and span 23 meters. In other words these cranes are one-over-four containers high and six-plus-truck lane wide.
The RTG's will be with high performance specification. Handling efficiency is achieved by high hoist, trolley traverse and gantry travel speeds and additionally the RTG's will be fully equipped with all modern features, such as Sway Prevention, Fine Positioning Systems etc. All features are electromechanical, with no hydraulics involved. KCI Konecranes own AC Frequency Control System composes the most modern and reliable drive for the RTG's. Eliminating the hydraulic systems and utilizing AC drives significantly reduce the maintenance costs of the RTG's.
The total world market for RTG's is 250-300 units per year. Since August 1999 Konecranes VLC has booked orders for 41 units of RTG Cranes. Konecranes RTG has been the clear technology leader since the introduction of the new generation, fully electromechanical Konecranes RTG in Savannah, USA, five years ago. Now Konecranes' RTG is on its way to become the world market leader also in volumes.
