South Carolina Inland Port Greer to upgrade fleet with two hybrid Konecranes RTGs

Trade press releases

South Carolina Ports purchased two Konecranes hybrid rubber-tired gantry cranes (RTGs) in Q4 2023 for their inland port operation in Greer. The new RTGs will increase the port’s overall capacity and supplement the seven existing Konecranes RTGs that are currently in use at the terminal. The new cranes are planned to be delivered and commissioned in Q4 of 2024.

Inland Port Greer, owned and operated by South Carolina Ports, operates 24/7 and offers an express, overnight rail shuttle between the Upstate of South Carolina and the Port of Charleston. The Greer container terminal is currently expanding to double its size and increase rail and cargo capabilities.

“South Carolina Ports is committed to an environmentally sustainable future. These two new hybrid RTGs will increase our cargo capacity and reduce our operational emissions when compared to traditional diesel-powered RTGs,” said Michael Hoffman, SC Ports’ Director of Inland Port Operations.

“Long-time customer SC Ports was one of the first to adopt our hybrid technology, so this new order underlines their continued faith in our equipment and expertise. As our hybrid RTGs grow in popularity in North America, it’s clear that these cranes provide the high performance and flexibility required by this demanding market,” says Alan Garcia, Sales Director, Port Solutions, Konecranes.

The order is for two hybrid Konecranes RTGs with a span of 6 container rows plus a truck lane and the ability to stack containers up to 1-over-5 high. They use a battery for normal operations and add diesel when more power is required. This combination of diesel and electric power significantly reduces fuel consumption and diesel emissions for cleaner and more economical operation. Each machine is fitted with an ergonomic cabin to enhance operator safety and efficiency, and TRUCONNECT® Remote Monitoring to maximize performance, optimize maintenance and minimize downtime.

A strong focus on customers and commitment to business growth and continuous improvement make Konecranes a lifting industry leader. This is underpinned by investments in digitalization and technology, plus our work to make material flows more efficient with solutions that decarbonize the economy and advance circularity and safety.
