Konecranes Receives Harbour Crane Order Worth Over 50 MUSD

Corporate press releases

Georgia Ports Authority (GPA), U.S.A. and Konecranes have closed a contract for the delivery of four Super Post Panamax Ship-to-Shore (STS) container cranes and 15 all-electric Rubber Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes to the Garden City Terminal in the Port of Savannah, Georgia. Deliveries will start in the spring of 2007 and continues until April 2008. The value of the order is over 50 MUSD.

As the volume of containers moving through the Port of Savannah escalates and the container vessels grow even larger, bigger and faster cranes are required for container handling. The newly ordered STS cranes can service the largest vessels in the world, and the RTG cranes provide the fastest container flow on the container yard. To date, Konecranes has delivered 11 STS-cranes and 31 RTG-cranes to GPA.

“Konecranes has repeatedly delivered equipment to GPA providing outstanding reliability and productivity allowing us to offer consistent value-based services to our customers. We look forward to Konecranes providing us with the next generation of the most advanced equipment in our industry,” stated Curtis Foltz, Chief Operating Officer, GPA.

“The GPA keeps a keen eye on physical upgrades and expansions to cater for flawless service”, says Sami Korpela, Project Manager, Container Cranes. “We are committed to providing productivity enhancing equipment to GPA and are happy to be able to deliver now also to a U.S. port terminal our STS-cranes using the latest Konecranes AC Drive Technology.”

Technical features of the cranes

The new Super Post Panamax cranes have a 65 long ton lifting capacity and can handle ships of Post Panamax size or container ships of 22 containers wide. The cranes are capable of using the twinlift technique for highest handling capacity. The crane structure is based on Konecranes’ new BoxHunter modular design. The outreach of the cranes is 61 m, designed for the largest container vessels to be built in the near future. The STS-cranes are also equipped with the new generation of Konecranes AC Drive System.

The new 16-wheel all-electric RTGs have a lifting capacity of 50 tons and are capable of stacking containers one-over-five high and six plus truck lane wide. With the highest productivity and the lowest maintenance costs, fuel consumption, pollutant emissions and downtime in the industry, the Konecranes RTG holds approximately 20% of the global market for 16-wheel RTGs.
