Konecranes basics: Port Solutions

In our Konecranes basics series, we take a look into how the company works and what it's made of. This time we take a deep dive into Business Area Port Solutions. It is the lifecycle partner for port and terminal operators with the widest and deepest offering in container handling to improve the safety, sustainability and productivity of terminal operations. We offer global knowledge to support customers' local needs and help maximize the efficiency of their operations.

Port Solutions’ main offering is for the container handling industry, where our customers are mainly marine container terminals and ports, intermodal container (inland) terminals and distribution centers and warehouses. Mobile harbor cranes serve also marine terminals, which handle bulk materials and cargo. Lift truck customers are in container handling as well as different industries where containers or heavy loads are handled with mobile equipment.

Container handling customers are both private and public. The majority of our customers are private companies, however in some geographies like the US many ports are owned and operated by state- or city-owned port authorities or companies. The industry is very consolidated and consolidating further, with Global Terminal Operators’ (GTO) share of global volumes increasing and currently representing about 60% of global volumes. That trend, when combined with our strong existing ties with GTOs, is promising for Konecranes for the future.
