Let’s get down to basics and take a closer look at what Konecranes is all about. What is our business made up of, and how is it organized into Business Areas? Read all about it in this three-piece article series.
World leader in material handling
Konecranes is a world-leading group in lifting and material handling, providing productivity enhancing solutions as well as services for equipment of many different makes. While most people don’t come into contact with our equipment and services on a regular basis, we ensure the smooth, steady handling of all kinds of materials – from foodstuffs to wind turbines to paper machines – by being at the core of our customers’ operations.
We are headquartered in Hyvinkää, Finland, and we design, manufacture, and assemble our products globally. Konecranes’ products are sold worldwide. In Service, we are the market leader with our unique global service branch network and unmatched service offering. Underpinning this is our technology leadership which forms a foundation for our competitiveness and positive impact.
We have a strong and diversified customer base across a broad range of industries. Typical customers operate in the fields of container handling, general manufacturing, the automotive sector, waste to energy and biomass, mining, nuclear energy, petroleum and gas, paper and forest, power, and metals production.
In 2022, Group sales totaled EUR 3.4 billion. We have approximately 16,500 employees in around 50 countries. Konecranes shares are listed on the Nasdaq Helsinki.
Business Areas focus on industrial material handling and ports operations
Konecranes is organized into two Business Areas – Industrial Service and Equipment, and Port Solutions – and supported by a range of Group Functions. Each Business Area serves a clear customer segment: industrial and ports.
Our operating model enables agile decision-making that is close to the customer. It’s also geared towards leveraging the efficiency and scale benefits provided by the centralized Group Functions and joint manufacturing operations.
In addition, both Business Areas use the same technology platforms, for example Konecranes’ proprietary Core of Lifting concept with optimized componentry, specialized control systems and automation elements, human-machine interfaces, connectivity solutions and related data and insights.
With our knowledge, products, services and solutions we seek to maximize the positive contributions to our different stakeholders and the surrounding society. Together with customers and business partners, we make lifting and material handling more productive and sustainable. We maximize lifecycle value and eliminate waste of resources, energy and time throughout the whole value chain. Our culture is rooted on uncompromised safety, high ethics as well as diversity and inclusion. We work for a decarbonized and circular world for our customers and the society.
Operating model
Port Solutions operates a global organization where manufacturing is centralized to chosen production sites. Products are often sold to global customers, who include ports, terminal operators and shipyards. Most of the equipment, services and software is sold directly by Konecranes´ salesforce, except for Lift trucks, where products are predominately sold through distributors.
For Industrial Service and Equipment, the regional and country organization model takes precedence, and a local footprint plays an important role. Sales frontlines are close to local customers. The same is true for manufacturing sites, as physical proximity is required to allow cost-effective delivery of the cranes.
