Three tips for keeping your crane in top condition
Cranes need basic lubrication, brake adjustments and wire rope replacements. Follow these tips to keep your crane in top condition.
1. Make a maintenance program that fits the crane’s operating utilization.
The program should be designed to take the use of the crane into account, as well as its age, the environment, and other factors affecting its maintenance needs. Heavy steel plant cranes may need to be attended to on a daily basis. Little utilized cranes may only need looking at twice a year. Keep in mind that maintenance must be done in accordance with the manufacturer’s service manuals for the crane.
2. Follow the guidelines of the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) for maintenance intervals and procedures based on the crane’s actual duty cycle.
Stick to the product documentation for maintenance requirements, or contact the professional crane service organization. Complex and technical tasks should be carried out by professionals, either from the operator’s own team or from dedicated companies.
3. Keep in mind that an improperly maintained crane poses possible consequences in terms of safety as well as production losses.
Many issues may arise if a crane is not properly maintained – failed bearings, worn wire ropes, failed brakes and a variety of electrical problems. A well-kept and tidy crane can provide a longer operational life and can lower the risk of breakdowns.
