Customer story

Eco-efficient mobile harbor crane for the UK, delivered and commissioned in record time

The Port of Middlesbrough is an important logistics hub in North East England. Due to the its growth, Port of Middlesbrough ordered another eco-efficient Konecranes Gottwald Mobile Harbor Crane in summer 2021, which was handed over in November 2021. The crane was manufactured, delivered and commissioned in just four months.

Proven excellence in multimodal logistics

The Port of Middlesbrough has been a key to regional trade for nearly 200 years. The family business with an 80-year track record of excellence in logistics, has built the port into a modern multimodal logistics center supporting manufacturing supply chains across various industries with deep-water berths, rail terminals, a container terminal and road transport.

Part of a sustainable £10 m master plan

In the framework of a £10 m master plan to invest further in the port facility, supporting its customers and positioning its business for further growth, Port of Middlesbrough needed a new high-capacity mobile harbor crane quickly. As they have three existing Konecranes Gottwald mobile harbor cranes, they opted again for Konecranes.

Increasing lifting power significantly

The new Model 5 mobile harbor crane is the biggest in the port of Middlesbrough and has allowed Port of Middlesbrough to significantly increase their available lifting power. It handles a wide range of cargo including containers, bulk materials, breakbulk, project cargo as well as components for off-shore wind and renewables.

Fully electric, powered by the port’s mains

In line with the drive to reduce emissions to meet their environmental targets, Port of Middlesbrough opted for a fully electric crane. The Model 5 crane is powered by the new harbor mains system which completely eliminates local carbon emissions and keeps noise emissions to a minimum.
