Breather dryers play a crucial role in averting corrosion in gearboxes. They shield the gear oil from atmospheric moisture and safeguard it from contamination by dirt particles, ultimately enhancing the equipment’s service life and preserving the oil’s quality.

General oil/lubrication information

The selection of the right lubricant and monitoring of it during usage are essential for optimum service life and performance of the gear reducers. The purpose of the lubrication is to form an oil film on gear teeth and bearing element engagements, and to dissipate generated heat through the walls of the gear reducer to the surrounding air.

Oil condition monitoring and maintenance

Oil ages in use and gradually loses its performance. To determine the right interval for oil changes or maintenance, it is beneficial to monitor the condition of oil with analyses. The following parameters and their change and trend are the most important: 

  • Water content 
  • Viscosity (change from ISO VG nominal values / fresh oil) 
  • Wear metals 
  • Additive elements content (change from fresh oil) 
  • Oxidation level (change of acid number from fresh oil)

The guidance for the evaluation of oil analysis results can be requested from Konecranes.

When monitoring wear metals, it needs to be considered that during the start up and running in period the generation of metal particles is higher due to the smoothening of the contact surfaces in gears and bearings. This may be seen in the results of the analysis before the first oil change.
