Konecranes to supply heavy duty cranes to turbine manufacturer in China

Corporate press releases

In August 2009, Konecranes received an order for two electrical overhead traveling cranes from Dongfang Electric Co. Ltd., a power-generating equipment manufacturer located in Deyang city, Sichuan Province, China. The cranes ordered will be used in Dongfang Electric’s turbine assembly hall. The cranes will be delivered in July 2010. The value of the order is not disclosed.

Dongfang Electric Co. Ltd. is one of the largest companies in China manufacturing generating equipment for hydro, thermal and nuclear power stations. The annual capacity is approximately 10,000 MW. As the size of power plants increases, so too does the size of turbines, and because of this Dongfang needed bigger cranes.

This was Konecranes’ second order from Dongfang Electric Co. Ltd. One year ago Konecranes delivered a 550-ton industrial crane to the same plant. Proven technology and commitment in customer’s operations have resulted in a strong relationship and trust between Dongfang Electric and Konecranes.

One of the decisive factors for this order was the compactness of the cranes. The customer was able to upgrade the cranes without big investments in new buildings or reconstruction. Safe operation was also of utmost importance: defined working areas for the cranes and tandem operation.

“This order shows that a Konecranes EOT crane is a viable option in installations where the customer is upgrading handling capacity in an existing shop,” says Eric Chen, Director, Process Cranes, Konecranes (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. “This is also the typical size of crane needed for turbine installation or maintenance in a hydro or nuclear power plant.”

The cranes ordered have a lifting capacity of 280 ton each, they span 33 meters and can lift 28 meters high.
