Konecranes to supply container handling equipment to Port of Damietta in Egypt

Corporate press releases

Konecranes recently received orders for six rubber tired gantry (RTG) cranes and two empty container reach stackers (RST) from Damietta Container and Cargo Handling Company (DCHC) in Egypt. The RTG order was received in August 2009 and the RST order in October 2009. The RTGs will be delivered during autumn 2010 and the RSTs during early 2010. Both parties have agreed not to disclose the value of the orders.

The state-owned Damietta Container and Cargo Handling Company is located inside Damietta Port at the Mediterranean, at the crossroads of the Far East and Europe where the main shipping lines operate. The port’s proximity to the Suez Canal makes it attractive to transit container vessels. In 2008 DCHC handled 1.241 million TEUs and the estimate for 2009 is 1.4 million TEUs.

“These investments are part of our extensive expansion plans for the future,” says Admiral Mohamed Saad Zagloul, Chairman of Damietta Container and Cargo Handling Company. “The new equipment will improve our productivity and we look forward to receiving it.”

“Konecranes has supplied container handling equipment to private companies in Egypt since 2003,” says Niklas Brönn, Sales Director, Konecranes Middle East. “The recent orders are a break-through into the important government sector in Egypt for Konecranes.”

“We are delighted to be able to supply Konecranes high performance container handling equipment to DCHC and the Egyptian market,” says Antoine Bosquet, Sales Manager, Port Cranes at Konecranes. “These orders are crucial references with regards to our expansion strategy in North Africa and the Middle East.”

The 16-wheel RTG cranes are fully electrical and hydraulic-free. They are equipped with active load control with a horizontal fine positioning system and Konecranes’ crane management system ensuring safe and uninterrupted use of the cranes. The cranes have a lifting capacity of 40 tons and can stack one over five containers high and seven plus truck lane wide.

Konecranes’ empty container reach stacker is one of the most high performance reach stackers in the market. It features many innovative solutions, including the “box type” chassis, load-sensing hydraulics (power-on-demand), electronic overload, safety and monitoring system. It has a lifting capacity of 10 ton and can stack six containers high and three deep.
