More RTG-cranes to Port of Houston

Corporate press releases

The Port of Houston Authority (PHA) has placed an order of six all-electric rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes from Konecranes as part of the expansion of Bayport Container and Cruise Terminal. The cranes will be delivered by July 2007. The value of the order is approximately $10 million (USD).

The modernisation of the Bayport Terminal is imperative for Houston to maintain its competitive edge against other deep-channel Gulf ports and remain a major international port. The investment in Konecranes RTGs is expected to accommodate for the anticipated mix of marine vessels and will be instrumental in meeting the demands of the global marketplace.

“We have had a very positive working relationship with Konecranes in the past. They have supplied the best solutions for our capacity requirements”, stated PHA Chairman Jim Edmonds. “The decisive factor for continuing our collaboration with Konecranes is their understanding of our needs and their service commitment.”

The cranes will be manufactured in Europe and will be fully erected upon delivery. Including this order, Konecranes has delivered 40 RTGs to the Port of Houston Authority.

“The contract solidifies a long-term relationship between the Port of Houston Authority and Konecranes”, says Tuomas Saastamoinen, Sales Director, Yard Cranes. “It shows the trust the Port of Houston places in Konecranes’ design and know-how, and we are happy to contribute to an increase in Bayport’s container handling efficiency.”

Technical features of the cranes

The 16-wheel all-electric RTGs have a lifting capacity of 50 tons and are capable of stacking containers one-over-five high and six plus truck lane wide. The RTGs are equipped with Active Load Control with Horizontal Fine Positioning System. Handling efficiency is achieved by high hoist, trolley and gantry speeds.

With the highest productivity, and the lowest maintenance costs, fuel consumption, pollutant emissions and downtime in the industry, the Konecranes RTG has established itself globally as the state-of-the-art RTG crane.
